Brighton & Hove LGBT Switchboard
Calls and Statistics - Why do people call switchboard
The following are call statistics relating to calls made at switchboard. It should be pointed out that all calls are confidential and no personal information is passed onto third parties without the caller's permission. The total calls for switchboard in 2003 was estimated to be 4, 000 and the website handles 45, 000 visitors, from a population of 35, 000. Overall Brighton and Hove has a total population of 247, 820 1

How to read and use these statistics

Whenever a phone call is received at switchboard, the operator will record a code which relates to the subject of the call. However these codes can be misleading and do not represent the length of time or any other information that the caller has been giving, for example, HIV calls are recorded as 2.15% of the calls in 2001. If the caller is classed as 'coming out' then safe sex information will have been given, but this will not have been recorded as an HIV call. Nearly all calls classed as emotional (9.36%) will be offered counselling thus making the total for the counselling project (12.82%).

n - data not recorded

The following charts should be viewed as guide and not as being 100% accurate as the data is initially recorded as notes. For example in gender a Male to Female Transsexual will be recorded as male unless they mention their gender. All operators were instructed where unsure to record the data as unsure, hence why the figure is the largest. Data for Disability was recorded but was negligible in terms of tabulated data and will only be published in the annual review.

Brighton & Hove LGBT Switchboard's Web site

Brighton Lesbian and Gay Switchboard has been online since 1997. Originally a small site put together to meet increasing usage and dependance of the gay and lesbian community on using the internet for obtaining information. The site has grown dramatically in both content and visitors over the last couple of years, and it keeps on going from strength to strength. The internet is a valuable key to our work, allowing users to access information about our services at the users own pace, privacy and comfort. During 2004 the site received over 60,000 visitors and despite being aimed at local community it has been visted by people from countries all over the world including visitors from Africa, America, South America and Australia.

In 2001 a decision was taken to allow the majority of application forms to be downloadable to help those who are disabled, dyslexic or those not confident with hand writing and now almost a third of all application forms received are downloaded from the internet.

Our site meets Bobby accessibility grade A for those who are differently abled. Bobby WorldWide Approved

The site is hosted by local Brighton based ISP Mistral Logo
