The Counselling project offers short term, focused counselling to individuals and couples, working on an agreed issue/are for a maximum of 12 sessions.

Switchboard is a non-profit making charity and we rely on clients counselling fees to cover our costs. We operate a sliding scale based on the clients ability to pay.

Our LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans) affirmative approach

Our LGBT affirmative approach involves:

  • Acknowledging the needs of lesbian and gay clients are unique.
  • Affirming who the individual client is as a person
  • Respecting that the clients needs are at the core of the therapy.
  • Use the core conditions of congruence, acceptance and empathy.
  • Are aware that the experience of heterosexism can damage self esteem.
  • Are knowledgeable about LGBT lifestyles and aware of available resources For LGBT clients.
  • Know that using assertiveness techniques can help repair damaged self-esteem.
  • Are sensitive to issues that affect LGBT clients (eg: homophobia, fear of rejection).
  • Affirming a range of lesbian and gay lifestyles.
  • Adapted from ALGBP - UK 1995

How we work

All of our counsellors work voluntarily with the counselling project. They are all Lesbians or Gay men with recognized counselling/therapy qualifications (or undergoing a recognized training). Our counsellors' training, theoretical background, skills and experience differ, however all of our counsellors work in LGBT affirmative way. All of our counsellors abide by recognized codes of ethical practice. They receive regular clinical supervision and are monitored to ensure the highest standards of good practice.

As an organizational member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy we are bound by their Ethical Framework for Good Practise and subject to their complaints procedures.

Some Questions to ask

Before starting counselling or therapy, we would advise all lesbians and gay men to ask their counsellor or therapist the following questions:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • Do you have experience of working with LGBT clients?
  • How would you describe your way of working?
  • What is your training background?
  • Was any of it about sexual orientation?
  • Please tell me about your code of ethics.
  • Do you have regular supervision?
