New name for Switchboard.

On 26th April 2007, its 32nd birthday, Brighton Lesbian and Gay Switchboard is pleased to announce that it will be changing its name to

Brighton & Hove LGBT Switchboard.

With a strap line of "Brighton & Hove's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans Information Support and Counselling Service.

"Switchboard aims to be an inclusive organisation that is able to respond to the entire LGBT community in Brighton and Hove. There are a number of initiatives that have taken place internally at switchboard to enable us to achieve this, and we are working hard at ensuring that the issue of diversity is at the heart of our strategic plans. Changing the organisation’s name is an important milestone in Switchboard’s life, and it is fantastic that our name now reflects the community we seek to serve." Natalie Woods, Switchboard Services & Development Manager.

"We have had a lengthy decision process in order to achieve this name change and questioned a number of people about the options including abbreviations. The most popular choice was the abbreviated version, but we had a concern that some people would not understand this, so we have added a strap line". Andrew Thompson, lead trustee.

"Historically we have had several different names beginning with 'The Brighton Lavender Line' in 1975 and later acknowledging the gay and lesbian community to form Brighton Lesbian and Gay Switchboard. The new change makes our name more inclusive and represents the community we aim to serve. However we are still the same familiar service". Iain Gowers, trustee.

"A large amount of work and training has gone into achieving this, making sure volunteers are ready for any increase in calls and enquiries and ensuring that when we launch the new name, we are completely ready for the change ahead and taking Brighton & Hove LGBT Switchboard into the next 32 years". Louise Johnson, trustee.

A new logo and poster have been designed and are available from the website to complement the name change. A new advertising campaign will be launched later in the year.

Changes at Switchboard!.

Brighton Lesbian and Gay switchboard has recently devoted time to thinking about its future, the types of additional services it intends to provide, and how best to structure itself to provide these services, alongside the organisation's current services. Switchboard is committed to enhancing its capacity to provide emotional and social support for LGBT people, and has recognised that in order to do this the organisation needs a manager to oversee the maintenance and development of the organisation and its range of services. It is for this reason that internal re-structuring is taking place and the existing role of 'Counselling Project Manager' is being developed to become the role of 'Switchboard Services and Development manager'

For Natalie Woods, who is currently the 'Counselling Project Manager' post holder, the re-structuring and development of her role means that as from September 1st 2006 her new role will be 'Switchboard Services and Development Manager'.

To discuss any of Switchboard's current services, the organisation's planned developments, or her new role, Natalie Woods can be contacted on 01273 207050 or please click Here

Switchboard celebrates its 30th Birthday.

Brighton Lesbian and Gay Switchboard celebrates its 30th Birthday. The organisation is now one of the oldest Brighton only charities and is certainly the oldest lesbian and gay organisation in the city.

"It's a milestone for our city and its community. I know that other switchboards are older, but back in 1975 our city was a smaller town and the fact that the community came together to form the organisation and the fact that it's still here is a massive achievement and much thanks must go out to all the volunteers that have helped over the years" Iain Gowers Trustee of Switchboard.

What went on to be named Brighton Lesbian & Gay Switchboard took its first phone call on April 26th 1975. It was launched by four men and two women in a room in a café in Brighton. At that point it was called 'The Brighton Lavender Line' so as to prevent callers having to announce their sexuality. The phone line was based in the Open Cafe in Victoria Road. The café was not the best place to run a helpline. The clientele of somewhat "shifty" characters didn't help, especially when they burst in whilst you were trying to deal with a tricky call.

1983 AIDS Leaflet
Over the years, like most of the city's gay scene Switchboard has been based in Hove and Kemptown, finally settling in at its home in Bartholomews. The organisation has played a vital role in the community's history. During the early 1980's the AIDS epidemic had started to take a strong grip on the gay community within Brighton. Following on from a conference organised in 1983 by London Gay Switchboard, Brighton Gay Switchboard decided to deal with the ignorance about AIDS, and the tabloid hysteria of the time, by producing a basic facts leaflet. Written at the end of 1983, the leaflet was released in January 1984. It is one of the earliest printed UK leaflets and material and predates the terms HIV or HLTV2, or any knowledge of safe sex information, as this was not known then. The helpline also became an invaluable source of information and a space to deal with the issues.

"People would ring in, frightened and without any knowledge whatsoever, everyone knew someone who had died or was dying and people needed information or to talk. At first no one knew how the virus was passed on, nor how to get tested. We lost a large number of volunteers to the disease at the same time too." Jenny Bennett (a volunteer since 1980).

In the late 1990's Switchboard launched a counseling service which aimed to meet the needs of the lesbian and gay community through offering low cost counseling. Today the service helps over 150 people a year and has 10 counsellors and one administrator. Switchboard remained an entirely volunteer run organisation for most of the 30 years, until 2000 when a decision was taken to employ a counseling project co-ordinator to help deal with the administration. Louise Johnson Trustee of Switchboard said "It doesn't matter what avenue you come in via Switchboard, you will always be dealt with by a volunteer, all our helpline operators and counselors are volunteers, they all want to help and are not paid. The benefits of having a worker for the counseling project means that later in 2005 we plan also to employ an admin worker for the helpline". If you would like to volunteer to be an operator, please see the website.

We have come a long way since our formation but there are a number of things which are still the same today as then. Today we still provide a helpline, as well as an email help service and a Minicom service. We are open every night and receive over 5,000 calls per year and our website handles over 60,000 visitors per year. Our complementary services lend a friendly ear and keep people in touch, whatever the need. We also provide an accommodation service, assisting by letting callers have the details of those with spare room in their homes. We have over 35 volunteers drawn from City's lesbian and gay community, which is estimated to be around 35,000 (13% of the total population). Switchboard offers a unique service operated from the heart of the community by a range of ordinary lesbian and gay men with the skills to listen.

Brighton Lesbian & Gay Switchboard has launched a brand new service - help by email.

"It has taken us a year to make this service available," said Iain Gowers, Trustee and Director of Brighton Lesbian & Gay Switchboard. "Four years ago I took over the website and noticed the volume of users coming onto the site was constantly increasing, and although we had asked people not email helpline related questions, we still received at least a couple every week. Rather than ignore these requests for help, it was decided to develop a specific Switchboard email helpline." Funded by Brighton & Hove Gay Men's Small Grant Scheme, Switchboard were able to launch this service, which has been running quietly since August. Iain explained, "We have had to change a lot internally, as most of our focus was around phone calls and the volume of callers. Now we are moving away from a helpline only, to an information service that includes a phone helpline, website, and email service."

"Anyone accessing our website can fill out a simple form, asking for information or assistance, and within 5 working days we will reply. It has been designed to be as simple as possible. It will especially benefit those who don't like using the phone, those who find it difficult to call between 5-11pm, and those who are abroad. This is really the start of a much larger project for Switchboard with further web related services planned for the New Year."

Rainbow Freedom Flag flies high at Brighton Lesbian and Gay Switchboard in the heart of the city.

Brighton Lesbian and Gay Switchboard is the first charity to fly the symbol of gay pride - The Rainbow Freedom Flag - on the front of its building.

The flag is globally recognised as the symbol of lesbian and gay community equality and is made up from the colours of the rainbow. 25 years since it was created for the gay community in San Francisco it is now a focal point for the community in Brighton and Hove.

"The flag flies in the heart of the city in the busy cultural and tourist area opposite the Town Hall," said Iain Gowers, Trustee and Director of Brighton Lesbian and Switchboard. "We wanted something that would represent us, that wouldn't be too controversial or compromise our offices. The organisation has been running for almost 30 years and flying the Rainbow Flag on our building brings us in line with other cities across the world such as San Francisco, Sydney, Amsterdam, Paris and Montreal.".

Health Authority approved statistics show that one in five men in Brighton and Hove are gay, with an estimated lesbian and gay population standing at 35,000.

"It has taken us a year to complete this, said Iain. "Before the idea was hatched I saw a map in the council's City News Magazine promoting the City of Culture bid 'Where Else'. It showed all the new developments and a projection of the community of the city in 2008. I looked at it and thought: where's the gay community in this? We weren't even mentioned. With such a large community here I thought we really need something to represents us so we sat down and decided to on the Rainbow Flag."

Brighton Lesbian and Gay Switchboard is a charity which runs a telephone support service and a counselling project. Every year it takes 5000 telephone calls and sees 200 clients for face to face counselling. It has an association with the Youth Group Allsorts.
