Volunteer to become a Help Line Operator

We are always looking for people who would like to volunteer their services, if you would like to volunteer to be one of our help line operators you don't need any special training or qualifications to become a help line operator - all we ask is that you are prepared to commit to three, two-hour sessions each month which you choose according to availability. We are particularly looking for people who can cover our 5-7 and 9-11 shifts and female applicants. We will provide you with all the training and support that you will need to enable you to make a difference to others. The best way to find out about becoming a volunteer operator, and what it entails, is to speak to one! Call us on 01273 204050 between 5pm and 11pm any evening and speak to a volunteer. Or you can complete a volunteer application that you can download from the link at the bottom of this page.

Volunteer to help in other ways

Running an organisation such as Brighton Lesbian and Gay Switchboard isn't easy. We need people with a wide range of practical, management and organizational skills to ensure that things run smoothly.

We are always happy to hear from people who would like to help by giving some of their time to support the organisation no matter what skills they bring. The following positions do not require you to help with the help line.  At the moment we have a particular need for the following skills:

Bookkeeper, Treasurer and/or Accountant

Switchboard requires a team of volunteers who can help, maintain the accounts and book keeping. Please apply by adding your CV to the application process below.

Can you write in another Language

We currently have pages from the front of the website which contain a basic information on Switchboard written in Danish, French, Italian, Spanish, Catalan, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Swedish and Russian. All the text in the pages where donated to us and have received positive response form the local council and community for having them. Therefore we are currently looking for anyone who would like to volunteer for free to translate the text into any language they can, in particular we are looking for Mandarin, Cantonese, simplified chinese, polish, icelandic, Irani, thai and finish. If you are interested please see the text to be transtlated here and then contact us here

To apply for a voluntary role:-

All volunteers are required to have basic computer skills, in particular using e-mail, and Help-line operators will need to be able to perform internet searches. To enable communication within the organisation all volunteers will need to have an e-mail account. For anyone without a personal e-mail account you can set up an email address (ie hotmail, gmail, yahoo etc) free of charge using switchboard's computers, which you can use any time to check your mail.
