Switchboard’s Sexual Harm Support Service is a specialist by and for service created to support LGBTQ+ people who have, or are, experiencing sexual harm. Sexual harm affecting LGBTQ+ people refers to any unwanted, non-consensual, coercive, or abusive sexual behaviour, experienced within the context of sexual orientation, gender identity, or expression.

While sexual harm can affect anyone, LGBTQ+ individuals may face specific risks and dynamics linked to identity, stigma, and discrimination. Sexual harm may include a wide range of behaviours, such as rape or sexual assault, unwanted sexual touching, pressure or manipulation to engage in sexual activity, and situations where a person is unable to give informed consent (for example, due to intoxication, fear, or coercion).

It can also include sexual harassment, both in person and online, stalking with a sexual element, and image-based abuse such as the sharing or threat of sharing intimate images without consent. In addition, sexual harm may involve exploitation within relationships or networks, including transactional sex, abuse of power, or situations where someone is groomed or controlled for sexual purposes.

Within some LGBTQIA+ contexts, this can intersect with chemsex, (the use of drugs such as GHB/GBL, mephedrone, or crystal meth in sexual contexts) can increase vulnerability to sexual harm. This may involve an inability to consent, coercion, or exploitation, particularly where substances impact capacity or are used to control or pressure individuals. Our Sexual Harm Support Workers are here to provide a safe, accessible and identity affirming space to explore your experiences, create a safety and support plan with you, and help you begin to recover from sexual harm.

Switchboard’s Sexual Harm Support Service provides confidential, trauma-informed, and person-centred support to individuals who have experienced sexual harm, recognising the impact this can have on safety, wellbeing, relationships, and day-to-day life. Support is led by the needs, choices, and pace of the individual, with no requirement to report to the police in order to access help. We offer emotional support and advocacy, giving people a safe, non-judgemental space to talk and be heard. This is combined with holistic risk and needs assessments, which consider immediate safety, ongoing risks, mental health, substance use, housing, and wider support needs. From this, our workers can develop practical safety plans and provide tailored support to reduce risk.

We also provide practical and advocacy-based support, such as help navigating housing, benefits, or other systems, and supporting individuals to understand their options around reporting. Where appropriate we can support you to liaise with agencies such as the police, health services, or Sexual Assault Referral Centres, always with your consent unless there are safeguarding concerns. A key part of our work is coordinating care and referrals, including access to sexual health services, mental health support, and

substance use services (including support related to chemsex where relevant). Our aim is to increase safety, reduce harm, and support recovery, while empowering you with information, choice, and control over what happens next.

Providing effective sexual harm support for LGBTQ+ people matters because their experiences are often shaped by stigma, discrimination, and identity-based abuse, which can increase both risk and harm. LGBTQ+ individuals may be targeted through threats to “out” them, face so-called “corrective” violence, or experience abuse that exploits isolation, minority stress, or lack of family support. These factors can make it harder to recognise abuse, disclose it, or trust services, particularly where there is fear of being misunderstood, misgendered, or not believed. Without inclusive, informed support, sexual harm can go unreported and unmet, compounding trauma and inequality. Ensuring services are affirming, accessible, and responsive to LGBTQ+ experiences is therefore essential to reducing harm, improving safety, and enabling recovery.

Switchboard’s Sexual Harm Support Service is for any LGBTQ+ person who has experienced or is experiencing sexual harm and lives in Brighton & Hove. Sexual harm is any unwanted, non-consensual, or coercive sexual behaviour, whether physical, emotional, or online, that violates a person’s autonomy, consent, and safety, and may in some contexts be linked to factors such as chemsex, where substance use can impact consent and increase vulnerability. Please know, you are not alone.
