Volunteer

Interested in volunteering with us?

For over 50 years, Brighton & Hove LGBT Switchboard has been here for our community – creating safe, welcoming spaces where LGBTQ+ people can connect, be heard, and find support. None of this would be possible without our incredible volunteers.

We’re looking for caring, committed people to join our volunteer team. As a volunteer, you’ll:

  • Support LGBTQ+ people through groups, projects and events

  • Help create safe and inclusive spaces where everyone feels they belong

  • Be part of a supportive volunteer community

  • Gain valuable skills in listening, empathy and community support

You don’t need prior experience – just empathy, commitment, and a passion for supporting our community. We’ll provide full training and ongoing support.

Volunteering with Switchboard means making a real difference in people’s lives – and being part of something bigger.

If you have any questions regarding volunteering, please contact Chris at [email protected].

Some ways you might get involved

Rainbow Neighbours (relaunching soon!) – Our befriending programme is evolving to include light-touch social prescribing. You’ll be trained and supported to help LGBTQ+ people set and achieve small wellbeing goals through regular 1:1 contact.

Group Support (Weekday Activities) – We run 3–5 social-based activities each month, for older LGBTQ+ people, such as coffee mornings, walks, and trips to local places of interest. These take place on weekdays during the day. Could you spare a couple of hours to help support these friendly and inclusive events?

Workshop Facilitation (Life Planning & Safety) – We’re developing a series of practical workshops for older LGBTQ+ people covering topics like making a willplanning your funeralLasting Power of Attorneyavoiding scams, and managing inheritance. If you have expertise in any of these areas, or connections to people who do, we’d love your support to help us deliver these informative and empowering sessions.

Community Events & Outreach – We’ll be at Pride, the Ageing Well Festival, and more. Volunteers help staff our stalls, welcome the public, and raise awareness of our services.

Office & Admin Support – Help behind the scenes with tasks like data entry, preparing resources, or event logistics. A great way to stay involved if you prefer a quieter pace.

Promotional Design – We’re keen to find someone with design skills and time to create promotional materials for our Health and Wellbeing projects – including BOLD (support for LGBTQ+ people who are bereaved, older, or living with dementia), Social PrescribingDomestic Abuse, and our Health Inclusion and Training work.

Flyer & Poster Distribution – Help get the word out across Sussex by distributing materials to cafés, libraries, GP surgeries, and community centres.

Domestic Abuse Survivors Group (Returning Soon) – We’re planning to relaunch our LGBTQ+ domestic abuse survivors group later this year and will be looking for volunteers with lived experience to help co-facilitate and shape this vital, peer-led support space. If this is something you connect with and feel ready to contribute to, we’d really value your involvement.

Creative Bereavement Group Support – With two new team members joining the BOLD project, we’ll soon be restarting our bereavement programming. These groups are often centred around a creative or crafting activity, maybe you’re a dab hand at macramé, art, photography, or textiles? Could you support the creative side of the session while staff facilitate discussions about grief and loss?

Of course, we’d also love to hear any ideas you have on how you might support us.
